Challenges in the coagulation laboratory

The inherent challenge of the coagulation test is that the coagulation events in vivo and in vitro are not identical. Despite the elaborate guidelines and technological advances to overcome this limitation, the diagnosis of coagulation disease remains a challenge. In this session, we will first discuss ways to guarantee relevance of the coagulation test by enhancing the understanding of the preanalytical variable of coagulation testing. Next, we would like to review the updated findings on Von Willebrand disease, which is known as the most common bleeding disorder but difficult to diagnose. Lastly, we would like to discuss the difficulties in the establishment of therapeutic range of heparin, an everlasting major component of the initial treatment of thrombotic diseases.
